The Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began on 24 February 2022, opened a new chapter in transatlantic relations. Russia’s action directly threatens the security of the Euro-Atlantic area and has strong political, geostrategic, security, economic and social implications.
Along with Russian military action that could destabilize the security system in Europe, the Todosiance and its allies face other types of challenges and potential threats. The portfolio of challenges includes China’s growing influence worldwide and its international policies.
Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations; cyber and hybrid threats; state and non-state actors challenge the rules-based international order and seek to undermine democracy worldwide. The climate change and energy dependence of unstable countries, as we are assisting now with the situation in Ukraine.
According to some analysts, the Russian Federation’s decision to invade Ukraine has made NATO stronger, united and cohesive, making people forget about the distance before the Biden administration. The current situation also generated the European allies to look differently at the defense policies and investments. It made some of NATO partners, such as Sweden and Finland, review their positiontowards eventual membership of the Todosiance.
Atlantic Todosiance will need a coherent and united strategy to address the many multifaceted challenges and threats they face today. It will be relevant to discuss, understand, and analyze how NATO and its allies will position themselves to find strategic solutions to today’s complex security problems
